Florence Price’s short and exquisite Adoration for Cello and Piano sets the tone for this season opener. Clara Schumann’s beautiful Piano Trio in G minor, Op.17 matches the romantic sentiment of Johannes Brahms’ splendid Piano trio No.3 in C minor, Op.101, his last trio and product of his mature compositional powers. Claude Debussy’s Sonata for Cello and Piano offers an evocative contrast.

Franz Schubert’s Piano Trio in B flat major, Op.99 ushers us into the early romantic era with music of extraordinary depth and great beauty. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Trio in D major, Op.70, No.1 has been nicknamed the “Ghost Trio” for its otherworldly middle movement. It’s a masterful work of strength, exuberance and power.

Franz Joseph Haydn’s Piano Trio in E flat major, Hob.30 presents with the pure elegance, symmetry and design of the classical era yet with an originality all its own. This 30th anniversary season finale is a pure feast of musical delights: Robert Schumann’s Fairytales, Op.132 for Clarinet, Viola and Piano is imaginative and invites whimsical narrative. Bohemian composer Joseph Suk’s Piano Quartet in A minor, Op.1 is lyrical, lush and richly textured. The monumental Piano Quintet in G minor, Op.57 by Dmitri Shostakovich is intense and stirs the soul. This program concludes with Prokofiev’s colourful and enchanting Overture on Hebrew Themes for Clarinet, String Quartet and Piano.
