Winter Potpourri

We open with the Piano Trio in F sharp minor, Hob.XV:26 by Franz Joseph Haydn. Delight in the grace and charm of music from the master. The heartwarming Notturno in E flat major, Op.148 by Franz Schubert follows with its sweet harmonies and lyrical interplay. The Waters, The Women for Violin and Piano by American Mohawk composer Dawn Avery offers a total change of pace and is utterly unique. The program concludes with the intensely passionate slow and fast dances of the celebrated Dumky Piano Trio, Op.90 by Antonin Dvorak.

This program presents full-hearted Spanish trios in the Romantic tradition: Joaquín Turina’s colourful and richly textured Piano Trio in B minor, Op.76; Enrique Granados’ evocative Piano Trio in C major, Op.50; along with Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons in Buenos Aires – an immersion into the sensual world of the tango! A few Spanish Dances, Op.12 by Mortiz Moszkowski, round out a rousing program.

Song of the Reeds

The title piece, Song of the Reeds, Op.28 - five fantasy pieces for Oboe, Viola and Piano by August Klughardt are based on five poems of the same name by Nikolaus Lenau. Mozart’s well-loved Kegelstatt Trio in E flat major, K498will be presented with the same instrument combination. Carl Reinecke’s melodious and uplifting Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, Op.264 offers a similarly rich mix of timbres. Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian Dances No. 5 & 6 for piano duet gives us a spirited contrast to all.

Glorious Quintets for Mother’s Day

Dedicated to all mothers everywhere, this program features two magnificent, full-scale piano quintets: Piano Quintet in A minor by African American composer Florence Price, features clear expansive melodies suggestive of bright open skies. The Piano Quintet No.1, Op.69 by Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco is compelling and passionate. Between both, Franz Schubert’s String Trio in B flat major, D471, will warm the heart and refresh the palette. – A glorious season finale!
